Marfan syndrome is an inherited condition in which individuals are usually tall and thin, have an increased range of movement of their joints, and their eyes and hearts may be affected. The inheritance is autosomal dominant which means that if a person inherits a normal gene from one parent and a defective gene from the other, this single "dose" will be sufficient for a person with this gene to be affected by Marfan syndrome.
The South African Marfan Syndrome Organization/ SA Marfansindroom Ondersteuningsgroep (SAMSO) provides information about Marfan syndrome to affected persons and health professionals throughout Southern Africa. It also provides support to affected individuals and their families as well as to people affected by other connective tissue disorders including Ehlers-Danlos, Scheuermann, Beals and Barlow syndromes. SAMSO is affiliated to the International Federation of Marfan Syndrome Organizations.
